Safari tab colours

Every so often I close the wrong tab in Safari, because the active tab is not visually distinctive from the other tabs I have open. In some lighting conditions it is ok, but is there a way to make the active tab more stand-out?

All my tabs in Safari (in either Big Sur or Mojave) have little "favicons" next to the title of the tab so I can easily spot the one I might want to close. If you have so many tabs open that you only see the favicon, that's a user-management issue. :)

If you just hover the mouse over a given tab, Safari will also produce a small preview of what the tab contains so again should help with identifying the tab you want to close.

I see those little favicons... I think the main issue is that I have a large window right on the other side of my monitor, and so I typically have a fair amount of backlight. Given that I'm keen on the view, I'm not willing to drop the venetions! So I'm left squinting sometimes... the mini-icons are smallish. sometimes they're the same if I have multiple windows open on the same website... and I'd still like the 'open' tab to be bright red...thanks Chas.

That's where the mini-preview of the page you get by hovering over the tab comes in handy.
