Status of Shaw email?

I am trying to advise a non-techie friend who uses Shaw email. In past months there was lots of talk of Shaw email going away and the need to migrate off to some other email system (like iCloud mail or outlook.com etc.) before that happens. However these days all the focus is on migrating off Shaw mobile.

Have I missed something along the way? Is there still an urgency to get off Shaw email or why has the talk on that subject stopped?

Legally, Rogers could turn it off tomorrow. Nothing was specified regarding Shaw email in the terms of the deal.

Rogers will not, of course do that. But they haven’t said anything aboutb it yet.

Possibly they’ll dump the few remaining Shaw email users off to Google, like Telus did.

More likely, they’ll eventually let us know when the service is to be discontinued. My phone will likely explode on that day.

Thanks for the update, Chas, So I can continue to advise my friend that he should migrate to another service asap.

Update: I have it on good authority that Rogers is still considering what to do with Shaw email users. It's not their priority at the moment.

SEVERAL options are being considered, including one POSSIBILITY of migrating @shaw.ca to @rogers.ca or something like that by auto-forwarding for a while until the shaw name can be dropped entirely. Another POSSIBILITY is following the path of Telus, i.e. dump users onto Google or some other service.

Whatever they end up choosing, the people who have secondary email address no affiliated with @shaw.ca are going to come out of this as the smart ones. If for no OTHER reason than having a backup email to use to help you recover a locked account, EVERYONE should have a secondary email address not affiliated with your primary one.
