Superdrive on el capitan

So my mac (imac with retina 5K) can't burn dvds. No problem. I had made the assumption I could just buy a superdrive. However, I've been googling about superdrives and el capitan and discovered superdrives don't work at all with el capitan. If I'm wrong...please let me know.

This was curious. I have a mid-2011 iMac which has a built in "Superdrive" and it continues to work just fine with El Capitan. So I went off and read a lot of articles that seem to confirm what you said about the external USB connected Superdrive not working with El Capitan.

However I also have an ancient Lacie CD/DVD player/burner that I acquired years ago from Judi Dyelle (thanks Judi). And it certainly continues to work beautifully also with El Capitan.

So one consideration may be to look for such a 3rd party drive and if you can buy it from somewhere that will allow easy returns (such as London Drugs or others) then you could give that a try.

I see three here for under $50

I believe (but I could be mistaken) that the problems refer very specifically to the Apple Superdrive designed to work only with the MacBook Air.

In any case, any third-party external drive should work fine. For best performance, make sure it says it is USB 3.0.

Also, remember that burning DVDs as a general exercise requires LOTS and LOTS of free space available, so be sure you have that before proceeding.
