I have used two screens for 10+ years and two days ago they stopped displaying as a single display but more as two independent displays. For example they both have the Apple tool bar displayed at the top. If I drag a document from the main monitor to the second monitor it cannot be view on both.... just on one montitor until it is complete moved to the second monitor.

Thanks Charles.... Going through step 3 to 6 did not fix the issue. Clicking on step 6 "Click the red button in the upper left corner to close the window." did not fix having two screen with the white (and active) menu along the top of the window. Start and restart did not result in a cure.

Thanks Charles.... Mission control was set up as per the mactrast.com site....
I solved the issue by setting the preferences in "Display" by unchecking "Show mirroring...... " Now I have an extended desktop.

I can't recall ever changing this setting .... but then sometimes I can't remember breakfast !!!!!!!
