Update Notices

I upgraded my iMac from Mavericks to El Capitan (about 4 hours). Then there was a long list of updates to Numbers and other apps I do not use, which I dutifully accepted (several more hours.) What's left is a notice about two updates. One is Garage Band which I never use. The update is marked "Paused" and "Resume" so I tried to resume the update. Nothing happened. I clicked on the GB icon, which took me to another page, and an update option, which I clicked, and it started. Then I noticed there is a fee for this update ($6.99) so somehow I stopped it and it remains "paused" again. Since I do not want it, and was not told there was a cost for the update, how do I delete the update message? Similarly, there is an update for iphoto, which is "paused". I clicked "resume" and nothing happened, so I again clicked the app icon. Up came a message saying something like "this app is not available from the App Store in Canada." So how do I delete the update message for the app I can't even get, even if I wanted it?

I'm very suspicious of this message for a paid upgrade, as no such thing exists for GarageBand. If you don't want updates for these programs, delete the program -- that prevents any updating of them.

Where did you see these? You should only see updates by opening the Mac App Store app. Nothing else.

Chas - I was away and missed your reply - thank you. I was getting these messages on the App Store site. I also get non-specific update notices that appear in the upper right of my screen. I checked the App Store tonight and the iPhotos and Garage Band updates are still there, though neither is showing as "paused" and I have not ventured further to see if there is a charge for Garage Band. If there are steps you would recommend so I can replicate what happened before let me know and I will try them. Meanwhile, I took a screen shot of what is there now and can send that to you if it helps.

Part of the reason I am doing these updates is to keep the Mac somewhat "stock" so when the time comes to pass it on, a new owner will have the Mac apps he/she wants.

The only circumstances that I can think of where there might be a charge for Garage Band is if you are upgrading from a veeerrrrryyyy old version or buying it for the first time for iOS.

Do either of these scenarios apply?

That probably explains Garage Band. I never use it (may have looked at it once or twice) so I have version 4.1.2. Still seems odd to me that I would be offered, along with all the usual free upgrades, one I would have to pay for, and not be told about the charge until after I had downloaded it.

The iPhoto message was different - I'll try that again and see what happens. And I trashed Garage Band to see if the update message goes away.
