Upgrade SSD drive

I have a 15 inch 256GB MacBook Pro Early 2013. OSX 10.14.6. The photos library is beginning to take up too much space and I would therefore like to increase the storage up to 500GB at least. I am considering two options. An external 500GB or 1TB SSD drive for the photos library, or alternatively replace the 251GB SSD drive in the MacBook with a 500GB SSD drive made by OWC. Is this latter option a good idea? The MacBook is mainly used as a desktop computer so portability is not a big concern.

I was recently able to upgrade a 2015 MBP from 256 GB to a 2TB internal SSD. Mobility is important to me so I went with internal. My geek ( said with sincere respect) found that an Intel drive worked after fiddling with a couple of adapters. Not for the feint of heart but it works great. I’ve had a number of issues but they have resolved themselves with the recent large update for Catalina. Also we had to upgrade to Catalina first, before things started going forward. Again, I have several full backups in the back pocket and consider it experimental to a degree. I’m still dealing with a missing email issue that may be Catalina specific. I’m under the impression that some websites list specific units that are upgradable.
